The defensive wall with its two cylindrical towers is depicted in the majority of the city plans of the 18th and 19th centuries. This part of the defensive wall was called the Tartar Gates or the Scythian Gates as the Tartar residential quarter stood behind the wall. The Southern Tower and part of the wall has remained standing till our times.
